Cathedral-Mosque in Córdoba, Spain |
Feelings: My wide image is a photograph of the arches inside the Cathedral–Mosque of Córdoba, located in Spain. After reading everything I wrote for this MyStory Blog, I realized I tend to write in the past tense. I am constantly recording historical events after they occur. I like to reflect on past experiences. My ideas are rarely sprung out of my head from one hundred percent intellectual creativity; I think I gather details from my personal past experiences as well as more well known historical events experienced by other people in order to invent new ideas. When I write, I try to make sure every sentence builds off of the sentence written before it so my pieces don’t sound choppy.
Metaphysics: The repeated arches in this cathedral represent my repetitive tendencies with both my ideas and my writing structure. Three out of my four main pages for this MyStory Blog somehow tie back into the topic of hockey. On my career field page, I explained how my dream job is not necessarily limited to my choice of undergraduate major. I said that I hope to start my own hockey equipment business some day. On my entertainment page, I talked about how the television media’s portrayal of Dominik Hasek and Bobby Orr, former professional hockey players, has influenced many decisions I have made throughout my life. On my community page, I reflected on my past experience attending a high school that was physically structured far differently from any other high school. The physical differences paired with slightly more lenient administrative policies allowed me to have much more independence in high school. My privilege of independence during those four years in high school allowed me to better prepare myself for college while excelling in my hockey career. The arch itself is a very supportive historical structure that has been used for centuries. It is widely used in architecture because it can distribute the pressure of very heavy weight placed on top of it. I like to think that my writing contains a lot of support, using personal experiences, research, and past conversations with different people to support my arguments.
Morality: Even though the arch is an effective architectural structure, it is outdated in modern building construction. The skyscrapers built in New York City do not have huge arches made out of bricks at their entrances. I believe I can write solid pieces of writing with plenty of support, but I use the same past tense writing style over and over again. Perhaps I should experiment with other writing styles in the future. If I wander out of my comfort zone in my writing I could potentially produce much better pieces of writing. This concept could apply to my life as well. It is better to try new things and occasionally fail in order to multiply my options and perfect the things I am good at than to be afraid to change my approaches and keep my future options limited to a narrow scope.
